3 DIY Pet Travel Items for the Car – Lexington, KY

As someone who spent a small fortune on pet travel gear at both Petco and Petsmart before making a cross-country trip with my beloved kitty, I can truly say I wish I would’ve taken just a few minutes of time to peruse Pinterest before hitting the checkout lane. I mean, I spend enough time planning my imaginary wedding on Pinterest as it is. Surely I could’ve spared a few seconds for my four-legged family member and found any of these three completely genius – and completely cheap – DIY pet travel items. Check ‘em out:

Leash Zipline

Inspired by…

The Kurgo Leash/Zipline Combo, $21.99

You’ll need the following items…

  • Bungee cord with hooks on both ends
  • Carabiner
  • Non-retractable leash

Instructions:

Secure the ends of the bungee cord to the handles above your rear windows, ensuring the cord is taut. Attach carabiner and, when ready to use, fasten the handle of your pet’s leash to the carabiner. (Hint: This would be absolutely fabulous for traveling with skittish kitties.)

Waterproof Hammock

Inspired by…

The Solvit Waterproof Hammock Seat Cover, $44.99

You’ll need the following items…

  • Approximately 3 yards of heavy-duty outdoor fabric
  • Thin, memory-foam mattress topper
  • 4 parachute buckles
  • 4 yards of webbing

Instructions:

Using a sewing machine, sew the mattress topper inside of the heavy-duty outdoor fabric to create a soft, bed-like rectangle. Create four adjustable points by sewing equally measured pieces of the webbing onto the corners of the shorter ends of the rectangle. Attach parachute buckles to webbing. When ready to use, secure parachute buckles to front and rear headrests to create a hammock. (Bonus: Aside from keeping your four-legged pal from becoming a driving distraction, it also keeps backseats hair- and scratch-free. Purrfect!)

Car Seat

Inspired by…

The Snoozer Lookout Car Dog Seat, $69.99 – $89.99

You’ll need the following items…

  • Rectangular laundry basket
  • Pillow (one that covers the entire lower portion of the laundry basket)
  • Approximately 1½ yards of fleece (or an an adequately-sized fleece blanket)
  • Non-retractable leash

Instructions:

Place the pillow in the laundry basket. Drape the fabric or blanket over the pillow and tuck it in slightly, allowing the rest to cover the laundry basket vent holes. Thread leash through vent holes and, when ready to use, attach the clamp of the leash to your pet’s collar. (Tip: You may also want to buckle in the exposed area of the leash for added safety. Plus, sliding around the back seat in a slippery laundry basket is probably not an ideal situation for Fido or Felix.)

The ultimate pet travel vessel is the 2015 Nissan Juke, though, as it’s completely customizable with colors and styles as diverse as the growing number of dog breeds. Just think of the 2015 Nissan Juke as the Chinese Crested of cars. (If you don’t know what a Chinese Crested is, please Google it right now. RIGHT NOW.)
